We invite you to visit the Moscow Zoo and get acquainted with guanaco – rear specie, an ancestor of domestic lamas. ZAO “SPF “DIEM” has adopted guanaco a framework of «Adopt animals» program.
Llamas’ natural habitats belong to the Cordilleras of South America from Tierra del Fuego to the northern border of Peru. Animals also live in desertified areas of Patagonia, where they prowl together with nandu. The highest rate of population is in the southern part of the ridge. Within the inhabitant areas the population has significantly reduced. The reason is that guanaco is one of the game species, hunted for leather, valuable wool and meat.
Bevies are also forced out from the pastures by cattle. Animals stick mostly to mountains up to the snow line, but avoid snow covered areas. During the dry season they move down to wet valleys.
In the Zoo the guanaco stag lives in the same enclosure with other llamas – vicunas, alpacas, llamas. The enclosure is situated on the Old territory of the Zoo close to the entrance to the right. During the warm season capybaras and water birds (the smallest swans - coscorobas or black-necked swans) could be also met here. All these animals present the fauna of South America and cohabit successfully.
ZAO “SPF “DIEM” team is happy to support the first Russian Zoo and to participate in rear specie conservation.
